Botox vs. Dysport: What Is the Difference and Does It Matter?

Both are botulinum toxin type A products that relax overactive facial muscles. The differences are real but often overstated. Here is what you actually need to know.

Botox and Dysport are the two most frequently asked-about injectable products at O Body + Wellness. Patients sometimes arrive with a strong preference for one, having read that the other is inferior or more likely to cause problems. In most cases, those claims are not well-supported by evidence.

Here is a clear breakdown of what is actually different between the two products and why the choice often matters less than the skill of the person injecting them.

What They Have in Common

Both Botox and Dysport are botulinum toxin type A formulations. They work by temporarily blocking neuromuscular transmission at the injection site, which relaxes overactive muscles. Both are FDA-approved for cosmetic use, both have strong long-term safety records, and both produce similar outcomes in the right hands.

The fundamental mechanism is identical. The differences are in formulation, unit dosing, diffusion characteristics, and onset.

Unit Dosing

Botox and Dysport are not dosed in the same units. This is one of the most common sources of confusion. Dysport typically requires a higher number of units to achieve an equivalent effect, because the units are defined differently by each manufacturer.

A provider quoting you "20 units of Botox" and "60 units of Dysport" for the same area may be recommending the same effective dose. Comparing unit numbers between products without accounting for this difference is not a meaningful comparison.

Onset and Duration

Dysport generally has a slightly faster onset than Botox, with some patients noticing results in 2 to 3 days versus 4 to 7 days for Botox. Duration for both products is typically 3 to 4 months, though individual metabolism plays a significant role in how long results last for any given patient.

Neither product has a clearly established advantage in duration based on current evidence. Both are considered to last a similar length of time when properly dosed.

Diffusion

Dysport molecules are slightly smaller and have a wider diffusion radius than Botox. In practical terms, this can be an advantage in larger muscle groups such as the forehead, where broader spread is often desirable. In areas where precision and containment are more important, such as around the lips or eyes, some providers prefer Botox for its more localized effect.

This is a technique consideration. An experienced injector accounts for diffusion characteristics in their placement decisions regardless of which product they are using.

Which One Is Right for You

For most patients, the product matters less than the injector's familiarity with it and their assessment of your specific anatomy and goals. At O Body + Wellness, our providers use both Botox and Dysport and will recommend based on the area being treated and what is most appropriate for your situation.

The conversation worth having is about your outcome goals, your anatomy, and your provider's plan. Not brand preference.
