IV Therapy at a Medical Spa: What Is Actually in the Drip?

IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins, and minerals directly into the bloodstream. Here is a clear breakdown of common formulations, what they contain, and what the evidence supports.

IV therapy has become one of the more common services at medical spas, and the marketing around it has outpaced the clarity. Clinics advertise drips as cures for everything from jet lag to chronic fatigue, and patients are often left unclear on what is actually being administered and why.

At O Body + Wellness in Fort Lauderdale, we approach IV therapy the same way we approach everything: with a clear explanation of what is in the formula, what it is designed to do, and what realistic expectations look like.

The Basics: Why IV Delivery

Oral supplements are subject to the digestive process. A portion of what you take by mouth is broken down before it reaches systemic circulation, and absorption rates vary considerably based on the nutrient, your gut function, and other factors. IV delivery bypasses the digestive system entirely and delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream, where they are immediately available.

This is not a trivial advantage for certain applications. Patients who are severely dehydrated, nutritionally depleted following illness, or managing specific conditions may experience meaningful benefit from IV administration that oral supplementation cannot replicate at the same speed or completeness.

Common IV Therapy Formulations

Hydration. The baseline for any IV drip is normal saline or lactated Ringer's solution, an isotonic fluid that restores circulating volume and electrolyte balance. Hydration drips are the most clinically straightforward and the most universally applicable.

Vitamin C. High-dose vitamin C via IV delivers concentrations that are not achievable through oral supplementation due to absorption limits. It is used in wellness protocols for immune support and as an antioxidant.

B vitamins. The B vitamin complex, including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12, supports energy metabolism at the cellular level. B12 in particular is often included in wellness and energy-focused formulations. IV delivery ensures complete absorption regardless of gut function.

Myers' Cocktail. A combination of B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and calcium delivered in a balanced solution. One of the most established IV formulations in integrative medicine, used for general wellness, fatigue, and immune support.

Glutathione. A powerful antioxidant produced naturally by the body. IV glutathione is used in skin brightening protocols and for oxidative stress support. It is often administered as a push following a standard drip.

NAD+. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is a coenzyme involved in cellular energy production, DNA repair, and metabolic function. NAD+ IV therapy is longer in duration than standard drips and is used for energy, cognitive support, and cellular recovery.

What IV Therapy Does Not Do

IV therapy does not replace a clinically managed approach to chronic health conditions, and it does not produce permanent changes to underlying physiology. A hydration drip restores what depletion took away. A vitamin infusion replenishes what the body can then use. It is a tool within a broader wellness picture, not a standalone treatment for complex medical concerns.

At O Body + Wellness, we are transparent about this distinction. Our IV therapy menu is designed for patients who want clinically administered, high-quality formulations without unnecessary fillers or marketing-driven ingredients.

What to Expect at a Session

Sessions at O Body + Wellness are administered by trained clinical staff. A standard IV drip runs 45 to 60 minutes. Wellness injections such as B12, MICC, and glutathione are faster, typically under 15 minutes.

You will be comfortably seated during the infusion. Your provider will review your health history before your first session and recommend the appropriate formula based on your goals.
