Lipolysis Injections Explained: How Fat-Dissolving Treatments Work

Lipolysis uses deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells in targeted areas. Here is a clear look at the mechanism, what areas it treats, and what the treatment process involves.

Lipolysis injections are one of the more misunderstood treatments in the body contouring space. Patients sometimes arrive expecting something similar to CoolSculpting or a laser treatment, and leave the consultation with a clearer picture of what lipolysis actually does and why it works differently.

This article explains the mechanism, the appropriate use cases, and what the treatment process looks like at O Body + Wellness in Fort Lauderdale.

The Active Ingredient: Deoxycholic Acid

The active compound in lipolysis injections is deoxycholic acid, a bile acid that the body produces naturally and uses to emulsify dietary fat in the digestive process. When injected into subcutaneous fat tissue, deoxycholic acid disrupts the cell membranes of fat cells, causing them to break down.

Once the fat cell membrane is destroyed, the cell contents are released into the surrounding tissue and cleared by the body's lymphatic and immune systems over the following weeks. The fat cells that are destroyed do not regenerate. The reduction in that localized area is considered permanent, as long as the patient's weight remains stable.

What Lipolysis Treats

The most well-established application for deoxycholic acid is submental fat, the area of fat beneath the chin commonly referred to as a double chin. Kybella, the brand-name formulation, is FDA-approved specifically for this area.

At O Body + Wellness, lipolysis is also used for other small localized fat deposits where surgical removal would be disproportionate to the concern. Common off-label areas include:

  • Bra line fat and axillary pockets
  • Small abdominal deposits
  • Knee and inner thigh pockets
  • Jowl area fat contributing to facial fullness

It is important to understand that lipolysis is a treatment for small, localized fat areas. It is not a body contouring solution for larger volumes of fat, significant weight loss, or diffuse concerns. Patients with those goals will be better served by medical weight management, Morpheus8 Body, or other modalities depending on the specifics of their situation.

The Treatment Process

Lipolysis at O Body + Wellness begins with a clinical assessment of the target area. Your provider maps the injection sites based on the anatomy and volume of the area being treated.

A topical numbing agent is applied before treatment. The injections are placed in a grid pattern across the treatment zone. Patients typically describe the sensation as a stinging or burning that subsides within minutes of the injections being completed.

Following treatment, swelling in the treated area is expected and is actually a sign that the treatment is working. Swelling represents the inflammatory response that initiates the fat cell clearance process. Bruising is also common. Both typically resolve within 1 to 2 weeks.

How Many Sessions Are Needed

The number of sessions required depends on the size of the area and the volume of fat being treated. Most patients complete 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Your provider will give you a clearer estimate after evaluating the treatment area. Some patients with smaller or less dense deposits achieve their goal in fewer sessions. The chin area typically requires 2 to 3 sessions for most patients.

Is Lipolysis Right for You

Lipolysis is most appropriate for patients who have a specific, localized area of fat that has not responded to exercise and dietary changes, and who are not considering surgery for the correction. It is not a substitute for weight loss and is not effective for diffuse or large-volume concerns.
