The active compound in lipolysis injections is deoxycholic acid, a bile acid that the body produces naturally and uses to emulsify dietary fat in the digestive process. When injected into subcutaneous fat tissue, deoxycholic acid disrupts the cell membranes of fat cells, causing them to break down.

Once the fat cell membrane is destroyed, the cell contents are released into the surrounding tissue and cleared by the body's lymphatic and immune systems over the following weeks.
